The story

Imagine a classroom where forty children sit elbow to elbow on wooden benches, sharing one worn textbook between three. The teacher asks a question, and every hand goes up.

These children want to learn. They have simply not been given enough of the tools to get there. This is Mubi-North, Adamawa State: a community that spent a decade rebuilding after the insurgency, only to find its schools were still left behind.

Alhaji Habu Memorial Academy was born from that rebuilding. It opened in July 2017, named for Farida Yahya's grandfather, a community patriarch who raised over 50 children and believed each one deserved every chance. Today it serves 303 students, with more than 100 on the waitlist.

The families who send their children here are not choosing between a good school and a great one. They are choosing between school and the street.

Why it matters

When a family cannot afford school, the child is cut first.

  • A painful paradox

Families here believe deeply in education. But tuition, uniforms, books and daily feeding often force them to take children out of school before the year is done.

  • Girls are the first to leave

When a girl disappears from a classroom in a conservative, post-conflict community, the path back is rarely short.

  • Sponsorship changes the equation

It gives families breathing room, keeps children in their seats, and tells a whole community that someone believes their children deserve a future.

A message from the Executive Director
“Every child, regardless of geography or circumstance, deserves a real chance.”

As a Mandela Washington Fellow I saw what is possible when systems invest in people: well-resourced classrooms, dedicated educators, and the quiet confidence of a child who knows the world sees them.

That experience did not make me want to replicate America in Mubi. It made me want to replicate the belief that every child deserves a real chance. AHM Academy is not a programme I run from afar. It is a school in the community my grandfather called home, for children who come from where I come from.

You don't have to give alone

These 303 children are not statistics. They are the next generation of this community's doctors, engineers, teachers, traders and leaders.

What they need right now is not a miracle. They need someone to say: I see you. I believe in you. Here is what I can give.
