At Alhaji Habu Memorial Academy in Mubi-North, Nigeria, 303 children are hungry to learn. Your sponsorship keeps them in their seats, fed, and dreaming bigger.
Imagine a classroom where forty children sit elbow-to-elbow on wooden benches, sharing a single worn textbook between three students. The teacher calls out a question, and every hand goes up.
These children want to learn. They are hungry for it. They have simply not been given enough of the tools to get there. This is happening right now in Mubi-North, a community that spent a decade rebuilding itself from the rubble of insurgency, only to find that its schools were still left behind.
My name is Farida Yahya. I am a Mandela Washington Fellow, and that fellowship showed me what is possible when systems invest in people. I did not return home wanting to replicate America in Mubi. I returned wanting to replicate the belief that every child, regardless of geography or circumstance, deserves a real chance.
Named for Alhaji Habu, my grandfather and a beloved community patriarch who raised over 50 children and believed each one deserved every chance. The academy serves students from Nursery through Junior Secondary School.
This is not a program administered from afar. It is a school I lead in the community my grandfather called home.

Families here believe deeply in education. Yet the pressure of tuition, uniforms, books, and daily feeding often forces them to pull children, especially girls, out of school before the year is done.
When a girl disappears from a classroom in a conservative, post-conflict community, returning is rarely easy. It is rarely the textbooks a family cuts first. It is the child.
It gives families breathing room. It keeps children in their seats. And it tells an entire community, in the most concrete way possible, that someone believes their children deserve a future.
Every dollar raised goes directly to student support for the 2026 to 2027 academic school year, starting September 2026.
